DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE SMALL SINS

Take care that you do not become one of those persons who, when they know that a sin is not a mortal sin, do not hesitate to commit that sin time after time. Heed the words of the wise man who tells you that he who disdains the little things will soon fall in the great things. Although it is true that neither seven nor seven thousand venial sins make one mortal sin, St. Augustine warns us: “Do not underestimate venial sins because they are small, but fear them because they are so numerous.” However small they may be, they do much damage to the soul. They weaken devotion, disturb peace of conscience, make the heart torpid, smother the fervour of charity, soften the rigour of the ascetical life, and offer resistance to the Holy Spirit. There is no enemy, however small, which, if we ignore it, cannot do us much harm.
