Monthly Theme for July 2019

Monthly theme for July: Baptism, Makes Us Servants

The Gospel passages for the second and third Sunday of the month of July highlight two important stories from the Bible. On the Second Sunday, the passage is on the story of the Good Samaritan, which provides us an example of Christian discipleship in terms of loving one’s neighbour. According to Jesus, that a person is a ‘neighbour’ is determined by the attitude a person has towards others. For example, are we willing to serve others, especially those different from us with humility and love? The story of Mary and Martha on the Third Sunday, draws us the person of Jesus himself. It reminds us that while loving service (Martha), is an important characteristic of a follower of Jesus, it is not the main priority. Christian discipleship is first and foremost, a personal adherence to Jesus (Mary). Together, both these gospel stories teach us what it means to love God and to love one’s neighbour, and therefore, give us a complete picture of Christian servanthood.
