Walking Through Holy Week

Inside Pic 2 Small

During this period of lockdown in our homes as a holy family of god ........

Dear Parishioners of the Church of St. Jude Thaddeus, Rawang,

Greetings of Peace, Joy, Love and Hosanna,

Praying, hoping and trusting all of you are keeping well, and most of all enjoying a quality family time together.

It has been a difficult time for us living in worry and being not able to do lots of our usual activity but we have all stayed connected as Church in prayer and online Mass. Apart from that many of you have responded to the cries for help of people in need. With you financial support and support in kind I have been able to reach out to so many needy families and people who have walked in to Church seeking help. A big thanks to all of you and I must say that I am very proud and happy to be your parish priest.

As all of us are not able to celebrate the Liturgy of the Holy Week in our usual manner in Church I have come up with some suggestions of how we can celebrate the Holy Week at home with our family with some paraliturgy activities ( paraliturgy – any activities that helps us to stay connected to the liturgy celebrated in Church). Please try to use these suggestions as we prepare ourselves to celebrate Easter. Apart from these suggestions all of you must also be receiving various resources and suggestion to celebrate this time with your family through the internet, please feel free to use them.

Remember to observe some silence, quiet and to be in a prayerful spirit from Palm Sunday till Easter.

PALM SUNDAY

In this celebration we celebrate the triumphant entry of Jesus to Jerusalem. There is a contradiction in this celebration, Jesus comes in to fulfil the “will of the Father” to face his passion and death and through his death bring salvation to humanity but the people welcome him with ‘Hosannas’ and Palms welcoming Jesus as the king who will overthrow the Romans and bring freedom.

To come out of this contradiction, let us this year welcome him into our homes our hearts by;

  • Gathering some palms and green leaves and hang some at the entrance of our homes. Get the head of the family to stand outside our home while the rest stay inside and welcome him in like welcoming Jesus into our homes and our hearts singing some hymns( can be found in the youtube – Palm Sunday Hymns).
  • Do not forget to dress up like every Sunday.
  • After the procession arrives to the family altar we say a prayer of welcoming Jesus into our home and hearts.
  • After this we will prepare as a family to participate in the online Mass.

Holy Monday to Holy Wednesday

Remember as we are all at home all the time we can this year be more proactive in preparing for the celebration of the Easter Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday/Easter) as a family.

  4. During this meal we can try to act out some of the conversations and things that happened at the Last Supper.
  5. Fix a place and prepare the things that we will need for the washing of each others feet.
  6. Prepare at least three places in our home where we could be silent and adore our Lord in the silence of our hearts (done to recapture the Gethsemane Experience) I will send some materials later.
  7. Participate in the online Mass

HOLY TUESDAY - PREPARATION FOR GOOD FRIDAY CELEBRATIONS

  1. We can walk and pray the Stations of the Cross within our homes.
  2. Download the pictures of the Stations of the Cross and put them around your homes.

EASTER TRIDUUM

HOLY THURSDAY

THE INSTITUTION OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST, THE PRIESTHOOD OF CHRIST AND A NEW COMMANDMENT, ‘LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU’
  1. Try to bake a bread and prepare a bottle of wine or some fruit juice (remember this is just symbolic)
  2. Have a family meal together and share the loaf and fruit juice. Speak the conversations that took place in the meal of the Last Supper.
  3. Washing of the feet of one another in the family.
  4. Reflect the experience of the meal and washing of the feet.
  5. Participate in the online Mass.
  6. After Mass move to the three designated place in your home and spend quiet time adoring the Lord in the silence of your hearts.
  7. Reflect the experience with family members.

GOOD FRIDAY :

THE PASSION AND DEATH OF CHRIST

  1. Day of Fast and Abstinence
  2. Pray and Reflect the Stations of the Cross. Each member of the family take turn to carry the cross and lead in the devotion. At the end spend some time in silence and reflect the experience with one another.
  3. You may want to celebrate the unveiling of the crucifix and veneration after participating in the online Good Friday Service.

HOLY SATURDAY & EASTER

  1. We spend the early part of the day entering into the Mind of Mary by praying the Stations of the Cross backwards starting from the 14th. Station and ending with the 1st. Station. Walking with Mary recalling all that happened in the passion of Jesus.
  2. In the evening prepare the place to light the candle your family has made, probably at the entrance of your home. Get the head of the family to light the candle and bring it in procession the same way the priest brings in the paschal candle at the Easter Vigil Celebrations. Place it at the Altar and sing some Easter Hymns while waiting for the online Mass. Each and everyone could hold a lighted candle while singing the Easter Hymns and waiting for the online Mass.

Let us all, although physically apart from each other come together spiritually as a Church and celebrate this Holy Week with Faith, Hope and Trust in this God of Mercy. May we also during this time welcome our brothers, sisters and family members who we may have ignored, hurt or separated from. This is the time for us to reconcile and come together. We began Lent with the words of Jesus on the cross - I THIRST, now is the time to fulfil Jesus’ thirst by us reconciling with one another and with God.

BE RECONCILIED AND EMBRACE THE RISEN LORD
